Hunger and Homelessness

The number of people in crisis is increasing as jobs are lost and availability of affordable housing decreases. Mission and Social Justice works in partnership with a number of community agencies that address immediate and long term needs of those who are homeless and hungry.

St. ElizabethSaint Elizabeth Transitional Shelter: Housing 32 homeless men, the shelter limits overnight stays to 30 days a year while providing counseling and work to move guests into transitional housing. St. E’s now has a second shelter, Casa La Familia, for women and families in its first year of operation.

Interfaith Community Shelter: An emergency shelter has grown over three years from housing men at the Salvation Army and women in church fellowship halls to a permanent shelter location owned by the City of Santa Fe and managed by the Interfaith Shelter Group, Inc. Originally open only from November through April, with a new location there is hope for building a year-round shelter and services center. Over 50 faith and community groups are now supporting this shelter with 1500 volunteers serving meals and acting as hosts.  During the winter of 2009-2010 the shelter provided over 11,000 bed nights and 22,000 meals for more than 600 different homeless men and women.

Esperanza Shelter: The shelter provides temporary safety for those who suffer from domestic abuse, primarily women and children. Counseling and support is important to move people on to claim a future free from danger and fear.

La Familia: Healthcare for the Homeless: Health care, education and prescription services are provided for homeless and indigent persons who do not have insurance or access to other health care facilities.

Food for Santa Fe and Bienvenidos: There are many ways First Presbyterian supports agencies which provide emergency food for individuals and families in crisis. Money and volunteers partner with Food for Santa Fe; bags of non-perishables for Bienvenidos are collected on the 4th Sunday of each month.

Juntos“Juntos”; Alice King Center; New Mexico Boys and Girls Club, Chimayo Abiquiu: Serving children in crisis also serves families indirectly. Estimations of children in the Santa Fe school who are homeless is over 1500. Juntos, a partnership with the Santa Fe Schools Adelante program, provides dinner once a month for homeless school children and their families. Juntos is funded through the Pentecost Offering serving children at risk. Alice King Center is a place of refuge for children whose parents are incarcerated. Gifts at Christmas along with financial support are provided. Funds are given to NM Boys and Girls Club providing drug education, safety and recreation for children in Northern New Mexico.
