Witness

“Diversity is the Spice of Life”:
Demonstrating the church’s commitment to diversity, over 35 people donned special T-shirts, carried banners and marched in the Gay Pride Parade this year. Diversity is also present through funding of the Covenant Network and More Light Presbyterians and the knitting of rainbow scarves for silent witness to diversity at the General Assembly of the PC(U.S.A.)

Partnership with Sagua La Grande, Cuba:
Working through the Presbytery of Santa Fe which has a partnership with the Synod of Havana, in 2000 First Presbyterian Church began a partnership with the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Sagua La Grande. Mutuality is vital in the sharing of resources, with people exchanges, emotional and financial support when needed and continuing prayer for each other.

Immigration Concerns/Awareness/Reform:
Ministry in New Mexico presents continuing opportunities for multi-cultural and interfaith reconciliation. The Mission and Social Justice Committee works in advocacy along with Somos un Pueblo and the Office for Lutheran Advocacy to monitor continuing legislative concerns related to immigration. Support for Borderlinks, an ecumenical educational organization based in Tucson and Nogales, AZ includes annual mission trips for close-up conversations with those affected by U.S. immigration and economic policies.

Fair Trade Products:
logoJC_Promotion of jobs and reducing the need for middlemen is a focus of this simple witness. Funds go directly to the farmers or to community projects promoting health, education and jobs.  During coffee hour each Sunday Fair Trade coffee, chocolate, and Palestinian olive oil are for sale.  Stock your cupboards with justice.

Continuing Support and Witness:
Additional financial support is given to several local organizations, including Ghost Ranch Conference Center, the Pastoral Counseling Center and the New Mexico Conference of Churches.
